in place-names describing a hammer-shaped crag or steep rock.
Occurs a few times in West Scandinavia as a by-name. There are a
few late occurrences of the name in Denmark, and it may possibly
occur in the earlier Danish place-name Hammerstrup or
Hammarsþorp, though this may also refer to the worship of the
god Þórr. May occur in the Anglo-Scandinavian place name Toft
Hameri." Her original source: Fellows-Jensen, Gillian.
Scandinavian Personal Names in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire.
Copenhagen. Akademisk Forlag. 1968 p. 130-131 s.n. Hamarr

place this in 1205. |

vert
Submitter desires a feminine name.
Eydís - Geirr Bassi "Old Norse Name" pg 9 notes Eydís as a

Gunnarr is found ibid pg 10 listed as a masculine first name
with eleven cites. ibid pg 17 notes that names ending in -rr
becomes '-rs' and adds 'dóttir'.
Saker Note: As the first name is marked with an accent, the
patronymic has been changed from the submitted form of
Gunnarsdottir to Gunnarsdóttir for consistency.

Azure chaussé, a senmurv couchant argent.
Submitter desires a masculine name.
No major changes.
Sound ("crispy consonants, please!") most important.

|
|
| 11: Gavin O'Shannon - Resub Device
Sable, a stag's head cabossed and on a chief embattled
argent a wolf passant purpure
This addresses issues noted in the two previous returns:
crenelations too shallow and non-recognizable charges as noted
in the Feb 2008 LOAR return: "The submitter's previous device
change was returned on the April 2007 LoAR for redrawing:
neither the wolf, nor its posture, nor the stag's attires, were
in a recognizable, acceptable form. He has redrawn those
elements, but also redrawn the line of the chief embattled, to
the point where it is now unacceptable. The crenellations are
far too shallow. If he were to use the line of the chief in the
previous submission with the wolf and stag's head in this one,
it might prove registerable." |
|
| 12: Hanne Abendschein - New Name & New Device
Per pale azure and vert, on a pile Or a compass star
purpure
Hanne - Brechenmacher s.n. Hann(e) "Hans von Bopfingen, den
man nennt den alten Hanne, u. s. Sohn Hans v. B., der junge
Hanne"
Abendschein - Bahlow (orig. German) s.n. Abendroth "seltener
Abendschein, -schön. " and "Zu Abendstern vgl. Morgenstern (z.

Abend notes at the end of the entry "Ausdruck der 2. schles.
Dichterschule im 17 Jhd. Abend|schein, schön" as well as
"Abendstern (1811 Findlingsn., auch ON.)"(photocopy provided)
Saker Note: could someone translate? Submitter noted surname
1) as Abendschein and 2) Abendstern with no other note. My
assumption is the second will do if there is not suitable
document for the first.
Saker Note: Does the compass star fit the space, or would it
be considered elongated to chief and base? |
|
|
13: Ilene ingen Ruadhagáin - New Name & New Device
Argent, a hummindbird rising contourny vert bellied gules
and on a chief vert three sewing needles bendwise sinister
argent
No major changes.
Meaning ((none specified)) most important.
Ilene - "A List of Feminine Personal Names Found in Scottish
Records" by Talan Gwynek (http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/scottishfem.htm
l) notes an Ilene dated to 1567 [DONALD, 215]
inghean - late Gaelic form for "daughter".
Ruadhagáin - Wolfe; Irish Names & Surnames; p 635; s.n.
Ruadhagáin - indicates that this would be a genitive form.
Submitted form is Ailléne ingen Ruadhagáin; However,
documentation notes that the submitter would prefer Ilene and
would accept late period forms of the rest of the name to get
it. A webpage without URL was provided. A google of the title
placed the page in the www.sca.org domain as noted above. Thus
this has been changed to <Ilene inghean Ruadhagáin>
Saker Note: Could someone give me a fuller cite for the
patronymic? Late period is needed.

each)"
bildrbriótr - constructed descriptive byname meaning
"axe-breaker". Geirr-Bassi has haugabrjótr "cairn-breaker" (p
22), hornabrjótr "horn-breaker" (p 23) and bíldr "axe,
axe-blade" (p 20) j and i have been used interchangeably.
Ulfsdottir - Geirr Bassi p 15 Úlfr as a masculine first name
- the -r becomes -s and adds dottir.
Saker note: The submitted descriptive byname is marked with
one accent. Because Ulfsdottir was submitted without and there
are other accents that should be in the descriptive byname, its
accents were removed for consistency. |

0) documenting various forms of Leisel. None, however, lost
the last 'e'. Documentation summary noted the article at
http://www.s-gabriel.org/docs/german/15f.htm l which also
does not document this spelling.
Gelücken - "Some Early Middle High German Bynames with
Emphasis on Names from the Bavarian Dialect Area" by Brian M.
Scott (http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/Early_German_Bynames.htm
l) GELÜCKE: 'fortune, fate; chance; favorable outcome', Lat
felicitas 'luck, piece of luck; felicity, happiness'. However,
gelücke is attested only from the 12th century, and it is
possible that Felicitas represents some other word. NHG Glück. *
Johannes Felicitas 1210. This document also does not show this
spelling. Bahlow s.n. Glück has Gluckch, 1414 and Erhart
