This design is basically, "Azure semy
of harps, a cat sejant guardant argent." Consider the armory of
Jordre Pargon of Windhover's Reach (registered December 1982 via
Atlantia): Azure, a snow leopard sejant argent, spotted sable.
No difference is given for the head positions (default vs guardant)
of whole animals. The spotting or striping on a critter does not
count unless it makes up at least half of the tincture. Thus you
have a white sitting feline on a blue field versus a white sitting
feline on a blue field with a white harps. There is a CD for
the white harps vs no white harps…but unless the spots on the snow
leopard make up half the tincture of it, there is no second CD to
clear conflict.
Name:
Arval's "Feminine Given Names from
the Online Catasto of Florence of 1427" (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/arval/catasto/)
has <Niccola> once and <Niccolosa> 34 times. I was unable to
find any evidence for <Nicoletta> as a plausible medieval Italian
name.
Past
registration is no guide to present registerability. <Ridolfo>
is found 231 times in Aryanhwy's "Italian Given Names from the
Online Tratte of Office Holders 1282- 1532(http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/italian/florence1282-1532.html);
it's a masculine given name. <Ridolfi> or <di Ridolfo> are the
two properly constructed patronyms based on this given name.
There
are two problems with the byname as constructed. First, <della>
isn't the preposition used in family names; it's <degli> (contracted
to <dei>). Second, <degli> is used with surnames, not given
names, so <degli Rudolfo> isn't correctly constructed.
We find “Nicolette”dated to 1508 in
the on-line article “Late Period French Feminine Names” by Aryanhwy
merch Catmael. url:
http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/french/latefrench.html
Changing the final “e” to an “a” does not make the Italian form of
the name, as in Withycombe, pg. 217, sub Nicola, Nicolette; states:
"Italian and French forms of Nicholas (q.v.). Nicholaa is not
infrequent in medieval Latin records, but is no doubt merely a
latinization of Nicholas when borne by a woman, who would in the
vernacular have been simply Nicol or Nicolas. Nicole, Nicolette,
Colette are fairly common in France and are occasionally borrowed in
England." The name is also cited from Dauzat, Dictionaire des
Noms de Famille et Prenoms de France, pg 451 s.n. Nicolas;
"The feminine "Nicole+, -olle" (baptismal name returned to
popularity and a matronym) is very old, as is the diminutive
Nicollette (12th Century)."
Since client requests authenticity and allows any changes, we are
sending this to Laurel as "Nicolette Ridolfi." |

Talib al-Azhar
<Flynthyll> |
NAME |
8/5/2005 |
Talib al-Azhar.
[Name] Talib is found in the names of Abu Talib; Talib ibn
al-Azhar (Dodge, the Fihrist of al-Nadim, vol. 2, p. 1107).
It is a fine, if not especially common, ‘ism.
As for al-Azhar,
however: “Yes, well, I know that John is only documented as being
used as a given name, but I wish to use it as a byname.” Al-Azhar
is well-documented being used as an ‘ism in the names of Abu
al-Azhar; Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Mazid ibn Abi al-Azhar [ibn
Abi al-Azhar means “the son of the father of al-Azhar”; Abi
is not a given name with al-Azhar being used as a cognomen];
Ja’far ibn Abi Muhammad ibn al-Azhar; Talib ibn al-Azhar; Talut ibn
al-Azhar, all found in the Fihrist, vol. 2, pp. 967,
1107-1108. We have not found its use as other than an ‘ism.
He might be Talib ibn al-Azhar, but we have no
documentary support for the submitted form of the name.
Thus, the name is not registerable as submitted
and the proper form of the name is already given as an example of an
actual name in the source used to document the name as period. |

This name combines two
given names with no byname, violating RfS III.2.a which says "A
personal name must contain a given name and at least one byname."
This cannot be considered an unmarked matronymic, because there is
no evidence that unmarked matronymics were used in Greek.
Device returned for redraw:
The enflaming is not drawn properly. The 01/2005 LoAR (AEthelmearc-R)
says:
"Morgan of Caer Graeme. Badge. Azure, a fess embattled Or and
overall a sword proper enflamed gules.
"This badge must be returned for redrawing because of problems with
the enflaming of the sword. While precedent holds that properly
drawn enflaming, small gouttes of flame issuing from the charge, is
a blazonable artistic detail and can violate the contrast rules
found in RfS VIII.2, in this case, the flames are entirely
disconnected from the sword and appear to "float" on the
low-contrast field. Recent precedent deals with a very similar case
involving flames proper: "The "flames" that are not attached to the
sword are each of a single tincture; those that are gules break the
Rule of Tincture. Objects that are enflamed should have small gouts
of flames emerging from, but still touching, the object at random
intervals" [Stephen Other, 10/04, R-Artemesia].
As drawn, these are neither small gouttes of flame, nor are they
attached to the annulet, so this is not an annulet enflamed. |

Myfanwy Llanrhaedr-Ym-Mochnant
|
Name
Device |
12/11/2006 |
There is some confusion
about whether Myfanwy is actually a period form cited in the
documentation, or a modern form used as an example. the article "A
Simple Guide to Constructing 13th Century Welsh Names" (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/tangwystyl/welsh13.html)
is based on the same data set as the one cited and does not cite
that form to period. The information on the
LoI doesn't provide evidence for <Llanrhaedr-Ym-Mochnant> as the
period form of the name, or any support for the use of the entire
compound place name as a byname. In other languages like English,
German, and Spanish the compound forms of place names were not used
in locative bynames, only the initial element was. Locative bynames
which use compound place names are not registerable in these
languages. In French, the practice can be documented, and is
registerable, so documentation would have to be supplied in the
Welsh case before a compound pattern would be registerable.
The place name doens't occur in Johnson's _Place
Names of England and Wales_, nor in John Garnons Williams's "Wales
At The Time Of The Treaty Of Montgomery In 1267" (http://www.gwp.enta.net/walhist.html),
so I can't
offer any period forms of the name.
Conflict: Morgan
MacDonnough Per bend sinister azure and argent, an owl displayed
and a decrescent counterchanged. Registered 01/1994
One CD for changing the decrescent to a rose, but that's it. If
there was a CD for changing an owl displayed to a falcon displayed,
this would still only be one CD for changing the type of all the
primary
charges, and since the types haven't been substantially changed,
this is not clear by X.2. |

Return for redraw and
unregisterability of a charge. "We no
longer register annulets of flames" [LoAR, 12/1998, Ansteorra-R,
Wiesenfeuer, Barony of]
This isn't quite a turnip proper. The 02/2006 LoAR says: "Ysabelot
Clarisse. Device. Or, a turnip purpure, leaved vert and on a chief
gules three bees proper.
Period depictions of turnips show less leaf in proportion to the
bulb of the turnip. Blazoned on the LoI as a turnip proper, this
turnip is predominantly purpure with a small argent tip. Period
heraldic turnips appear to be primarily argent with vert leaves;
some emblazons show a purpure cap. Proper for a turnip is the top
half of the turnip purpure and the bottom half argent (with a
somewhat wavy line of division) with vert leaves; neither the
purpure nor the argent should predominate. The argent tip on a
purpure turnip need not be blazoned, nor does a purpure cap on an
argent turnip as both are considered artistic details.
This overturns Laurel's advice from July 1988
when accepting Roger de Bayeux's device: "We would strongly suggest,
however, that they be drawn so that the purple portion of the root
is predominant."
The turnip leaves should be about a quarter to a half of the
total charge. Due to the variability in size of the leaves, the
tincture of the leaves does not contribute to tincture difference.
This is similar to our treatment of a rose's slip and leaves." |

issue. " ...While the name Teleri does
appear in the Arthurian tale "Culhwch ac Olwen," an examination of
this story shows that the name occurs once in
passing when a character swears by a long list of names and events.
Current precedent is to accept the names of significant characters
from period Arthurian literature. However, Teleri is
just a name mentioned in the course of the tale; it is not even the
name of a character. Barring documentation that the name was
used by humans in period, or that it is the name of a significant
period literary character, it cannot be registered. [Eleri Cadard,
